What we do, What you need
At Kumu Jaz's Beat School, we offer online and in-person instruction in the exciting world of Beat Making and Music Production. Students learn how to create beats, write songs, record audio, build melodies, arrange music, and produce complete tracks from start to finish. Our program is open to all ages and experience levels, whether you're exploring a creative hobby, developing new skills, or preparing for opportunities in music and gaming. Instruction is guided by over 40 years of music experience, 30 years in media and entertainment, a Bachelor's Degree in Music Production from Full Sail University, and years of classroom teaching experience in Hawaiʻi's public schools. We believe music and technology are powerful tools that help students build creativity, confidence, and lifelong skills while having fun creating something uniquely their own.
Our Curriculum
LEARN TO RECORD & PRODUCE ON DIGITAL AUDIO WORK STATIONS
- Sound Trap / Studio One / Logic pro / Reaper / Garage Band for recording, producing and post production. Also learn to "Sample" and Chop
- learn to use Pad controllers Maschine & MPC
LEARN BASIC MUSIC THEORY
- major & minor scales / chord progressions / number system / harmony / melody / Rhythm , basics on Piano
ARRANGING AND PRODUCING
- learn to arrange a song into it's "form" or parts using basic charting and "musician language"
LEARN RECORDING ENGINEERING
- operating a mixing board / how to communicate with client / record vocals & live instruments
- proper microphone placement in small spaces - work on both analog and digital gear
SHOP YOUR MUSIC
- learn the ins and outs of today's music industry and how to release your music to the world (digitally and organically) and how to make business out of your passion!

In Section One you will use a free online software called Sound Trap. Here you will learn how to arrange music loops to construct a beat., start your music theory lessons , and pick which instrument will be your main tool as an artist or producer. This is where you will get your initial basics to be able to work on any Software.

In Section two you will upgrade from Sound Trap to a Pro DAW. You will start learning how to record and bring in audio into your production. You will start incorporating your own parts, that you write and perform yourself to create original music. This is also where you will learn to combine Midi (digital piano) with Live recordings (guitar bass etc). By this section you will also started your private lessons on your main instrument.

Section Three you learn to "Finish" the song. This includes writing melodies (instrument or vocal) , lyrics, and mixing and mastering your project for professional release.
Casual Plan Cost: $50 per month
This option is perfect for students who prefer to learn at their own pace. You'll have access to all online videos and lessons and can work through the course on your schedule.
As you submit assignments, they will be graded using the course rubric, and you'll receive personalized feedback within 48 hours.

The Producer Program Cost: $500 One-Time Fee
This intensive 12-week accelerated program is designed for serious students who want to develop professional music production skills as quickly as possible.
You will have access to all course materials but will follow the curriculum in a structured sequence. Assignments must be completed in order and submitted for evaluation.
As you turn in assignments, they will be graded using the course rubric, and you'll receive detailed feedback within 48 hours.
Included:

- Structured 12-week curriculum
- Assignment grading and feedback within 48 hours
- One 45-minute private Zoom session with Kumu Jaz each week
This program is ideal for students who are committed to rapidly advancing their production skills and building a strong foundation for professional-level work.
Mentorship & Private Lessons Cost: $100 per month
This option is designed for existing beatmakers, producers, musicians, and artists who want personalized guidance to elevate their skills to a professional level.
You'll have access to all online lessons and videos, allowing you to focus on specific areas where you'd like additional development. Course assignments are optional; however, if you choose to submit them, they will be graded and returned with feedback within 48 hours.
Your weekly one-on-one sessions can be customized to fit your goals.
Included:
- Full access to all online lessons and videos
- Optional assignment submission and feedback
- One 45-minute private Zoom session with Kumu Jaz each week
- Personalized coaching and project feedback
- Music theory instruction
- Beginner to intermediate lessons in piano, ukulele, or drums
